It was pouring – the ground was wet and slippery, and Volcanic Ash’s hoofs sunk progressively deeper into the sloshy mixture as they descended the steep hill towards, what Hugo knew to be a creek
The creek
It was probably a river by now. Icy cold dread hit Hugo like a punch to the gut. If it was one thing the dry earth of Yawarda Stud lacked, it was water. Hugo had entered his favorite stallion unbeknown to the downpour to come, and Volly had always been notoriously anti-water. So much so, that it seemed almost foolish to attempt coaxing him in…
He slid again, and stumbled as he hit the next bend, and Hugo’s horrible gut feeling intensified in his throat. It wasn’t huge, but it was enough – rhythmically drumming hoofs skipped a beat, and then another as Volly’s hindquarters started to roll under and he slid and scrambled in the thick mud. Vision blurred as the rain hammered down, stinging Hugo’s face; the morning fog still obscuring the path ahead. Panic started to bite at his conscience when Volly stumbled sideways off the path, slamming his rider’s thigh into the trunk of one of the forest’s massive trees. Hugo howled in pain, snapping him from his fog-minded state and instinctively he drove his heals into Volly’s barrel. The stallion launched himself forward, almost jolting Hugo out of his seat and guided him back into the path. The looming river came progressively closer. Again, Hugo’s heals drove into Volly’s flanks, pushing his forward, and again Volly jerked and shied, until…
SPLASH!
It happened so fast, Hugo was sure Volcanic Ash had flown the river’s width. In two massive strides, Volly had cleared the river kicked off over the obstacle on the bank. Relief flooded through the panic and dread as Volly tore up the opposite rise with more determination and speed thank Hugo had ever experienced from the young stud. He grinned, despite the rain and the mud and his aching leg, and patted Volly’s huge neck
‘You’ve done good, buddy. Well done!’
He couldn’t wait to get back to hotel for a hot shower and his gorgeous wife…
